11th Annual Run for the Animals!

Sunday, May 18, 2014 at 8:30 a.m.
Wheaton Regional Park, Wheaton, Maryland
2000 Shorefield Road
Wheaton, MD US 20902

Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary hosted its 11th annual "Run for the Animals!" The 5K run and 1 or 1.7 mile fun walk was a fundraiser dedicated to supporting the life saving work Poplar Spring does everyday. From the warm up, running and walking on the scenic trails, the dog and people raffles, the prizes, and the abundance of food, a good time was had by all. The race was held at Wheaton Regional Park in Wheaton, Maryland. Although dogs couldn't participate in the run, they were more than welcome to come out and join the 1 or 1.7 mile walk.

The MC for the race was Lisa Berigan, radio host of BIG 100.3!!! Lisa has over 20 years experience hosting radio shows and is the proud companion to Daisy, a Sheltie mix. Click here to listen to an interview between Lisa and Terry Cummings, Poplar Spring's director.

The Boot Camp GirlPrior to the race there was a pre-race warm-up by the Boot Camp Girl for all the runner’s and walkers!

Race participants also had the option to go the extra mile and raise additional funds online for Poplar Spring. They could even select a picture of a specific Poplar Spring animal to proudly display on their web page, and let their friends and family know about that animal as well as all the others at Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary. Prizes were awarded to the two entrants with the highest pledge totals. Those interested in raising additional funds could use the following sample e-mails to send to your friends and family. (Sponsorship e-mail / Sponsorship e-mail referencing a specific animal)

Packet Pick-up was held on Saturday, May 17 from 10:30 - 3:00 at RnJ Sports, 11910 Parklawn Drive Rockville, MD 20854.
Great goodie bag items, where you can choose the items you would like for your goodie bag, were available.
Packet Pick-up was also held on race day, Sunday, May 18, at Wheaton Regional Park from 7:00 a.m. until the start of the race at 8:30 a.m.

How our race is GREEN
Poplar Spring worked hard to make the race as environmentally friendly as possible. Click here to find out how.

We also collected used athletic shoes, as well as any other type of shoe, at the race site to be recycled by Nike and/or sent to Africa for distribution.

Poplar Spring strongly encourages carpooling to the race. For your convenience, we have set up a carpooling website.

Virtual Race BagsPoplar Spring has partnered with Virtual Race Bags to produce a 'virtual goodie bag' in an effort to ‘go green’ and provide additional benefits to our participants. As a participant of this year's event you received an email invitation to the Virtual Race Bag prior to the event giving you access to the bag. In the race bag there was an array of valuable information including exclusive offers, coupons, giveaways, and messages from our sponsors.
